Holiday Survival Tips

Surviving that yummy holiday temptation....

We all look forward to time off with our families, sitting around in the kitchen gabbing, laughing and trying out some family recipes. However, the week after many of us feel sluggish, maybe even a bit guilty for a bit of holiday overindulgence. So the question is how do you get through the big dinner without compromising your health and fitness goals?

1. Get out earlier that day and go for a workout, power walk with the family or just play outside with the kids. If you can follow this level of activity for at least one hour you are destined to burn between 200-700 extra calories.

2. Drink lots of water that day, so you will feel fuller and also keep your thirst in check so you are less likely to go for sweets or other food cravings that we often think we need when we are actually just dehydrated and need some clean H2O.

3. Have the lean protein such as the white turkey breast (skin off), chicken breast or fish.  If you are vegetarian or vegan consume high protein vegetables (beans, lentils, peas, kale, etc). Say no to gravy, extra sauces or salty additions.

4. Say yes to veggies and salad. We often tell clients and patients, if you are invited out for dinner and are unsure of what will be on the table, then bring the host a very nice garden salad, not only are you being helpful you know it is one item you can eat!

5. Say no to alcohol, 1 drink is approximately 100 calories (1.5 oz of hard alcohol or wine or beer) if you have three that is 300 calories, if you have 10 that is equivalent to 1 pound of extra weight you have just put on. Remember 1 pound of body fat is 3500 calories, so the little extras really add up.

Last but not least, remember to have fun and be proud of your commitment to living a healthy lifestyle and remember to give thanks to those people and things around you that you feel proud to be around or have accomplished this year!

Amy's Testimonial

I had the privilege of working with Dr. Kevin Ashby for 10 weeks leading up to my first figure competition – the NPAA Canada Championships & Magnum Instincts Pro Show!

Kevin developed a structured meal plan for me, which evolved throughout the preparation process, to adapt to the changes in my physique and condition. The emphasis on eating a high volume of nutritious, clean and balanced foods was easy to understand and to buy into - and I believe that the overall delivery of this plan encouraged a healthy attitude towards eating throughout the preparation process.

Kevin's training programs were dynamic and challenging – but satisfying as well - as I was able to work my way up to completing workouts, and increasing my weights and training volume. From my training with Kevin, I saw improvements in my strength and endurance throughout the prep process, and was able to maintain my muscle mass into the competition.

Kevin’s reputation in this sport is well-earned; and his passion, integrity and strong foundation in fitness and nutrition went a long way towards making my competition preparation a positive and healthy experience.

Thank you, Kevin!

Sincerely,

Amy Phinney

Incredible Mom Transformation! Leslie V!

Down 45lbs since July!
"When I joined Endurance on 8th early 2012 I was on an endless mental/emotional treadmill – thinking of where I wanted to be in terms of my health, my weight and my level of fitness.  I was wishing for change but not making real commitment to it; disappointed when I didn’t make any progress even though I didn’t change any of my behaviors!  I did my first FitCamp with Sam Medina and was very sore for an entire week.  But I went back and that was the start of my journey.

I’m very grateful for Endurance on 8th for the comprehensive training they offer.  It was the combination of workouts, nutrition tips and tools, accountability and check-ins with coaches, and the goal setting that have helped me to reach my goals…over 40lb weight loss since July (and nearly 70lbs down in total since my heaviest after having my son).  Huge praise and thanks to Dr. Kevin Ashby, Dr. Wendy Carvalho Ashby, Lani Pickering, Irfan Jessa and Lara Schamotta for getting me organized and into ship shape!

This comprehensive program was the key to my success.  For as long as I can remember I always put things off or gave up half way through...this time there was no stopping me.  I committed to myself and my goals and I DID IT!

Watch out world…I’m just getting started now!"
